Growing up between multi-cultural East London and his parents’ homeland of Nigeria, Funmbi Omotayo has lead the tough life of an immigrant here in the UK. The problem here is that he barely scratches the surface of his personal history. The difficulty of moving 4000 miles to a new home is covered by stories about the trouble people had pronouncing his name – hardly the deepest dive into the problems of a massive relocation.
It’s all nicely polished, but the whole thing feels like five decent 10 minute weekend sets stitched together with Funmbi’s admittedly friendly, easy going style. A segment on the London Olympics is especially dated having been road tested since before 2012 – the good news being that Rio is just around the corner so it’ll probably stay in the set for another couple of years yet. If there is a theme it’s possibly that racism cuts across colour boundaries. But it's difficult to take any lessons away from a show that takes all of the easy outs, and never gets close to making his wholly white audience squirm.
