Staged in the heart of Edinburgh's gay district, Ponydance's latest production makes every effort to exploit its unashamedly camp appeal. The host for the evening, Paula, is quickly established as a catty bitch. The music played throughout would suit a student union's "cheesy pop" night. The audience is taunted by the image of a toned young man who threatens to take his shirt off but... doesn't.
It's got obvious camp appeal. But, the biggest question facing Where Did It All Go Right? is whether it can appeal outside of this target audience.
The show depicts an evening spent in a nightclub where a couple meet and begin to dance, only for their flirtatious reticence to be interrupted by Paula's unwelcome interjections. An energetic display and some bawdy audience interaction later, the trio are seen embarking on their drunken walks home. The mute bartender who busied himself in the background during the spectacle, finds himself alone after closing time. He strips down to a gym kit and loses himself in Michael Sembello song 'Maniac'. Having experienced complete closure, the audience is happy to clap along.
The show's success lies in its refusal to take itself too seriously. Though its slickly choreographed gyrations are impressive to watch, they take second spot to the cast's well honed comic timing. However, while there are many laughs to be had during the show, such as when a performer employs terrible chat up lines on an audience member, these aren't very memorable.
