Fresh from a well-received BBC Radio 2 pilot, Two Episodes of MASH's Joe Wilkinson and Diane Morgan trade in what they describe as "low-key, mundane glamour". It's a fairly accurate self-assessment and, true to the team's name, their rapid-fire sketch show plays out with references to kitsch television shows from the 1970s peppered throughout.

Morgan is nominally the straight man – her dry Bolton wit forming the perfect counterpoint to Wilkinson, whose serpentine gurning recalls a slightly more controlled Mark Heap (Green Wing's Dr Statham). If the duo seem more comfortable and the material tighter since 2009, its likely due to the influence of director Stefan Golaszewski (part of Tim Key's Cowards mob).

But what marks them out as special is the brevity of their bite-size sketches, never pushing beyond the three minute mark. Even more refreshing is that the sketches are uniformly excellent—strange encounters that blend social discomfort with the absurd—choice examples being an unhappy cockney couple caught out at a Songs of Praise filming, and a sympathetic portrayal of Noel Edmonds caught in his own personal Deal or No Deal purgatory.

Morgan and Wilkinson don't chase the laugh – their aim is to leave you with a painful smirk for long after you leave the venue. They succeed. Contenders for the best sketch show this year? Possibly.
