Built around the premise of a commuter consumed with contemplations of love, life and loss, Tokyo Love Song is a show which truly baffles. Disparate stories and images flash on screen whilst performer Shoko Ito jumps from character to character, serving only to further isolate an audience already puzzled by Ito’s artistic subconscious.
Luckily, Ito is a deeply charming performer who very nearly manages to carry us through this strange journey with the force of personality alone. She is undoubtedly a skilled physical performer but with stories that do nothing but confuse (ranging from spacemen to tired sagas about mothers-in-law), Tokyo Love Song is a frustrating hour.
