To opt for a chat show with a changing lineup would usually suggest an element of potluck – but with a host like Dave Hill, this is a safer bet than most. Hill is onto a winner with his stage manner alone: physically and socially gauche, brow furrowed in perplexity, he mutters constantly about how he just "nailed" the preceding segment. It’s this unconvincing arrogance that supplies most of the humour and, especially during his brilliantly overblown intro, it sees tonight’s criminally small crowd tipped into spasms of laughter. A prime selection of clips showcases Hill’s flair for deadpan mockery, while tonight’s guests—clean-cut Jarlath Regan and adorably geeky Charlyne Yi—are completely nonplussed by Hill’s obtuse questions. The Explosion will never fail to amuse, no matter who features.
