There is something quite cute about the opening set-up of The City and Iris. Leaning on each other while crouching and standing in a huddle, the entire cast is taking a nap.

Glass-Eye theatre company have created something accessible and moving, using a simple but affecting story about a young woman left timid and scared by a childhood trauma. Despite the bare stage, the show has a spellbinding ambience, further enhanced by the sound effects and music created live by the rest of the cast.

The atmosphere and some of the plot elements of the show are reminiscent of the aesthetic of the French cinematographer Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the man behind Amelie and Delicatessen. However, the real enchantment here is created with a delightful combination of minimal resources and promising talent.
