Photo 51 is the story of the largely unrecognised contribution of Rosalind Franklin to the scientific history of the 20th century. But, as worthy a story as this undoubtedly is, one doesn’t often associate scientific advance with compelling theatre.
Strangely, though, combining an almost childlike playfulness, Mr Bean-esque silent nonsense and scientific history makes for a compelling hour of theatre. The enthusiastic young cast flit between experimental physical-theatrical silliness and well-delivered, heartfelt dialogue. Although it falls down a little in terms of narrative structure—requiring its audience to either know the background of Photo 51’s protagonists or fill in the blanks with guesswork—this is a rather lovely play.
